Less plastic and more accessibility: the revolution of installing water fountains on merchant vessels
Water coolers. News 22/05/2024Sustainability in the naval sector is on the rise. Examples include the use of biofuels to reduce CO2 emissions or the installation of water treatment systems to prevent the introduction of invasive species through discharge. However, recently, there has been a growing trend towards reducing plastics by installing drinking water fountains instead of bottled water.
Water consumption on large merchant vessels had been limited so far to the purchase and use of plastic water bottles. This constant supply resulted in increased plastic generation, CO2 emissions, and reduced available space. However, in the midst of a sustainability drive, many companies are now opting to install drinking water fountains in their respective fleets.
Canaletas, a leader in the sector with more than 55 years of experience, has produced a water fountain specifically designed for the naval industry. In fact, more than 100 ships in Germany already have one of these water fountains. This measure has resulted in environmental benefits and cost savings for various companies.
The use of water fountains can reduce a ship's bottled water supply by more than 78% in just one year. In total, this can save up to 5,400 bottles of water annually per vessel. This reduction has a significant positive environmental impact.
Additionally, these drinking water fountains are specially designed to withstand extensive exposure, regardless of environmental conditions. Their cooling capacity, durable material - stainless steel, and easy installation make them attractive to fleets looking to adopt a new way of consuming water on their vessels.
